My research shows great team leaders do six
things above all others.

1. They generate a strong sense of personal
ownership for the productivity of the team.

2. They get everyone in the team feeling like
they are in the same boat together.

3. They discover, embrace, and spotlight the
intrinsic motivations of team members.

4. They make and keep operating agreements
––about communications, accountabilities, and
meeting management –– to build trust and
confidence.

5. Then they seek an aspirational goal that
magnetizes the team toward it.

6. Finally, they discover and celebrate the
unique differences each member brings to the
team.

You need not be a manager, supervisor, or
assigned leader to do this. Anyone can.
“Integrative power,” i.e., the ability to get
things done together, can’t be assigned to
anyone because it’s already available to
everyone, and no one can take it away from
you unless you let them. You can learn – and
choose-- to do what great team leaders do.
