Subject: [Partnerwerks TeamWisdom Tips] Team Awareness
Dear TeamWisdom Tips Subscriber,
Do you wish others would care about team dynamics as much as
you do? The #1 reason people don't attend to team dynamics
is because they aren't aware of them--I don't mean in a
formal, educational sense, but in a pragmatic and
real-to-them sense. If you want to make members more aware
of your team dynamics try this:
Choose one team member and have an informal one-on-one with
her in which you ask if she is receiving the kind of support
from you and other team members she needs to succeed. Then
listen. Listen well. You are listening to discover three
things:
1. Mode of Interdependence. Does she believe she is
_dependent_ on the team ("Well duh, I can't do X if you
don't first do A."), _positively interdependent_ with the
team ("The team helps me win."), _negatively interdependent_
with the team ("When the team wins, I lose, and when the
team loses, I win."), or _independent_ from the team
("There's no linkage whatsoever.").
2. What's in it for her? How does she define winning in her
role or on this team. What is she in pursuit of and does she
believe she can get it?
3. Does she believe the team wants her to win?
The more your partners feel positively linked to you, know
that you understand how they win, and believe you want them
to win, then the more they will care about, pay attention
to, and take responsibility for your relationship dynamics.
And this holds true regardless of your personality types or
thinking and communication styles! And in most situations,
you can do something to affect these three things.
Try it.
Wishing you a world of responsible and productive
relationships at work. Faithfully,
Christopher
