2. Welcome Notes

Thank you for caring enough about your work to read
TeamWisdom Tips. Lots of you responded with raves (mostly)
and rants (a few) about my views on Outcome Thinking in the
last issue. I'm happy to have generated interest. Today's
issue reprints--by popular demand--a Top 10 list. And if new
content is all you seek, check out the Resources section
tips for leveraging your Outcome Thinking muscle.

3. TOP TEN REASONS FOR TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR TEAM'S
    SUCCESS

(10.) You might be able to avoid special team-building
sessions where, instead of actually working
together on your team's work, you'll fill out
personality instruments to learn that you are
         different from others.

With apologies to my friends who do amazing work with
Myers-Briggs, DISC, MMPI and other instruments, you know
that Partnerwerks philosophy is based on the observation
that team-building begins with definiteness and clarity of
team purpose rather than with mutual appreciation.

(9.) Someone has to take responsibility for team success,
and the truth is that the assigned team leader and
other members might not know how.

Unfortunately, team leaders are seldom selected for their
TeamWisdom. So that creates a niche for you.

(8.) You'll save your own derriere.

If for no other reason, you should take responsibility for
your team's success because YOUR success depends on it.
Besides, your team might win big, you'll be their hero and
get a plaque with your name on it.

(7.) You'll reduce your stress and frustration, just
maybe quit drinking, and sleep better.

Okay, so maybe you won't quit drinking, but at least you
won't be drinking in order to forget the agonizing day at
the office.

(6.) You won't have to live as a "team ghetto" victim.

Instead of viewing a high performance team experience as
something that happens by chance once every career or two,
you can move from team to team with great expectations and
confidence in your applied TeamWisdom.

(5.) Make more money by leveraging your technical
         competence.

Read the tea leaves. With the rapid move to team-based
performance appraisals and team-based pay, soon enough your
compensation will be based on how many successful teams
you've served. Get started.

(4.) You'll no longer have to whine "It's not my fault.
I got put on a bad team!" because you don't deliver.

You'll actually be getting your work done through your team.

(3.) Transform deadly boring team meetings into cool work
sessions no matter what your role in the team.

Compared to ten years ago, professionals report a 250%
increase in the amount of time spent in team meetings
according to research by my friends at the 3M Meeting
Network. Isn't it time for a 250% increase in your
TeamWisdom self-leadership?

(2.) You'll know exactly how to play win/win in a seeming
         win/lose world.

A highly networked world means that the opportunity for the
Age of Integrity is at hand. In the Integrity Age every one
wins or every one loses-- all people at all levels. Which
way do you want it to be?

(1.) Instead of working in a networked world, we could
make a collective return to working in rigid
hierarchy, bureaucracy and red tape. Would you
         prefer that?

Get started with this week's 5-Minute TeamWisdom Stretch.

4. 5-Minute Practice Tip

What good reason do you have for demonstrating more
TeamWisdom in the teams you serve and the meetings you
attend? Take that reason and make it bigger and brighter in
your mind, then make it stronger and more colorful until it
compels you to take action.

I wish you a world of responsible and productive
relationships at work.

Faithfully,
Christopher

5. TeamWisdom Resources

This list is for all who asked for resources about Outcome
Thinking. You'll have to do a little digging on your own,
but here's a good map to start.

1. Look carefully at the whole "positive thinking" movement,
you know, Norman Vincent Peale, etc. There's a lot of good
ideas there.

2. Check out the "science of success" literatures starting
all the way back with Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich."
And look at "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Maxwell Maltz. His ideas
on the psychology of self-concept launched most of the
motivational speakers of the 70's and beyond.

3. Look into NLP, (neuro linguistic programming). The best
known guru is Tony Robbins and his books like "Awaken the
Giant Within." Look into concepts like "outcome-framing" and
"toward motivation versus away from motivation."

4. And all the work on visualization, especially from sports
psychology. There's a bunch of books. I'm familiar with the
"Inner Game of Tennis" (and golf, etc.), and "Mental Fitness
Training for Sports." There's also been some work done in
medicine on visualizing cancers shrinking, etc. And remember
the work on visionary organizations.

5. And check out Partnerwerks Team Orientation Process
(keyword search at http://archive.mail-list.com/teamwisdom)
which features collective and individual outcome thinking!
