CORRECTION -- IT WASN'T MANDELA
Uh oh. I goofed. And I want to correct it before the goof
multiplies.
Nelson Mandela apparently never spoke the words widely
attributed to him on quotation websites and erroneously
reported in articles, speeches and essays, including
TeamWisdom Tips two days ago. Instead, the words belong to
Marianne Williamson. Thank you to Tim McMahon of the
University of Oregon for the correction. Here is the entire
work.
OUR DEEPEST FEAR
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest
fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our
light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve
the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so
that other people won't feel insecure about you. We were
born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give
other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated
from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates
others."

I know times are tough and costs have been cut. I wish we
could offer zero percent interest financing with nothing
down. We can't. You are just going to have to find the
budget so you can get the leadership development you need.
You know that when the economy turns back up you won't have
time.
Remember, I'm going to lead the session from beginning to
end and I promise to make excellent use of your time and
have fun too. My guarantee is in writing, well, html
actually, but you can print it out and its got my picture
next to it.

Enough with the cute stuff...You realize it's the human
side, not the technology, that bogs you down. You deserve
this! These are the best information, tools, and
communication strategies I've collected in twenty years of
studying how to be powerful when sharing responsibility with
others to get things done. It's not rocket science, but I've
taught rocket scientists how to get their expertise used!
And, if you have a team that's not meeting it's objectives,
bring the whole team to Being Powerful In Any Team. I
promise the team will get more accomplished during their
three days at Being Powerful In Any Team than if they stay
at the office and work together. Now THATS accelerated
learning! The seminar pays off before its over and that
makes the new skills like a free bonus!
NO BOREDOM!! A friend of mine says if you are not tooting
your own horn there is no music. So, unabashedly, I offer
these comments from people I have recently worked with:
"...an overwhelming success!" Lori Pilsbury, PMP, AT&A
Project Management Center of Excellence
"I highly recommend Christopher...he is an awesome
communicator and teacher." Red Lustig, National Training
Coordinator, Whole Foods Market
"It's pretty clear to me we'd be out of business if we
hadn't done this work with Partnerwerks." Craig Wadham, VP
Engineering, DTM Corporation
"Outstanding presentation...I would highly recommend" Debbie
Kurita, Assistant City Manager, City of Santa Ana, CA
"I view more than 400 videos each year in hopes of finding
the right speaker. The vast majority are about
entertainment, not substance. Christopher Avery is the
exception. His presentation style offers that ever-elusive
blend of style and substance." Eric Welsh, Conference
Director, ProjectWorld (www.projectworld.com), Imark
Communications

Thank you. Since you've read this far, here is a bonus Tip
for you.

TOP TEN REASONS FOR
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR TEAM'S SUCCESS
(10.) You might be able to avoid special teambuilding
sessions where, instead of actually working
together on your team's work, you'll fill out
personality instruments to learn that you are
different from others.
With apologies to my friends who do amazing work with
Myers-Briggs, DISC, MMPI and other instruments, you know
that Partnerwerks philosophy is based on the observation
that teambuilding begins with definiteness and clarity of
team purpose rather than with mutual appreciation.
(9.) Someone has to take responsibility for team success,
and the truth is that the assigned team leader and
other members might not know how.
Unfortunately, team leaders are seldom selected for their
TeamWisdom. So that creates a niche for you.
(8.) You'll save your own derriere.
If for no other reason, you should take responsibility for
your team's success because YOUR success depends on it.
Besides, your team might win big, you'll be their hero and
get a plaque with your name on it.
(7.) You'll reduce your stress and frustration, just
maybe quit drinking, and sleep better.
Okay, so maybe you won't quit drinking, but at least you
won't be drinking in order to forget the agonizing day at
the office.
(6.) You won't have to live as a "team ghetto" victim.
Instead of viewing a high performance team experience as
something that happens by chance once every career or two,
you can move from team to team with great expectations and
confidence in your applied TeamWisdom.
(5.) Make more money by leveraging your technical
competence.
Read the tea leaves. With the rapid move to team-based
performance appraisals and team-based pay, soon enough your
compensation will be based on how many successful teams
you've served. Get started.
(4.) You'll no longer have to whine "It's not my fault.
I got put on a bad team!" when you don't deliver.
You'll actually be getting your work done through your team.
(3.) Transform deadly boring team meetings into cool work
sessions no matter what your role in the team.
Compared to ten years ago, professionals report a 250%
increase in the amount of time spent in team meetings
according to research by my friends at the 3M Meeting
Network. Isn't it time for a 250% increase in your
TeamWisdom self-leadership?
(2.) You'll know exactly how to play win/win in a seeming
win/lose world.
A highly networked world means that the opportunity for the
Age of Integrity is at hand. In the Integrity Age every one
wins or every one loses-- all people at all levels. Which
way do you want it to be?
(1.) Instead of working in a networked world, we could
make a collective return to working in rigid
hierarchy, bureaucracy and red tape. Would you
prefer that?
I wish you a world of productive and responsible
relationships at work.
Faithfully,
Christopher
