SOFTWARE DEVELOPER TESTIFIES

Dear Christopher,

I'm a software developer. My last contract, but hopefully
not my *last* one, <grin> was on a team where team player
meant "Shut up and do what I say." The *I* in this case was
the Project Manager, and the CowboyCoder who was the
TeamLead.

Do you know what a CowboyCoder is? It's a programmer who
won't share information, who won't work/play with others,
and who is brutal in his attacks on other programmers. My
last contract had a guy like that, and out of 10 highly
skilled ($$$) programmers he only let two of us actually
work on the code for the real program.

When he saw that I was learning fast he got upset with me,
and when I left he was only letting one programmer work on
the real code. I won't tell you about the verbal abuse I
and others suffered. Other programmers were under-used,
under-valued, and under-appreciated. They said things to me
like "I'm so mad I don't care anymore."

What a waste of resources!! Why did the PM let him get away
with it? I don't know, except that there were deadlines; it
was a highly visible project; that programmer was the only
one who knew the system (of course.. do you think he planned
it that way?)... who knows why?

Anyway, when the PM first came on the project, about a year
ago, he talked a good game about teamwork and "team
players," and I got your book "Teamwork is an Individual
Skill."

I thought it was great, and lent it to the PM, who gave it
back to me saying "interesting." I don't think he actually
read it.

I've been on too many Software Development teams that work
like this. So I looked for a way that I could learn to have
an impact, and make the teams I work on, at least, better to
work with... starting with me.

You wrote a great book... and I want more.

Thanks for asking,

Kay
