How to Get People to Take Responsibility

Responsibility eTips, November 2007

Thinking that those around you aren't as responsible as you are? You might want to confront your own sense of actions and consequences. Here are some steps you can take:

First, Understand Responsibility Redefined yourself. Responsibility means owning your power and ability. It is not obligations, shoulds, rights and wrongs, or who did what to whom.

Second, Demonstrate Responsibility Redefined. The fastest way to get others to take personal responsibility is for you to demonstrate it yourself (really!), otherwise you will be out of integrity in expecting it of them, and they will feel that and respond in kind.

Third, Ask for Responsibility Redefined. Amazing things happen when you ask people around you to operate from a position of personal responsibility (and to expect it of you).

Finally, Teach Responsibility Redefined. The first three steps provide a platform for you to speak from your own experience about the Responsibility Process™ and the Keys to Responsibility™.

A Challenge: When was the last time you taught the Responsibility Process™ to someone?

Something to Confront: How are you creating, choosing, or attracting the lack of ownership you see around you?

You can delegate authority, but not responsibility.
