Three times in the last three days I've been asked in conversation whether I took a summer vacation this summer. Each questioner noticed that I maintained a fairly active presence on the web as THEY were taking five weeks vacation—totally unhooked from the office. For many of them this week is the first week back—straight into a professional development course. Tough re-entry

It is routine for professionals here to take five weeks vacation every summer. The general understanding is that it is the responsible thing to do for mental, physical, and family/social health.

I think it makes great sense. It seems to me that outside of the United States, it’s far more common to have longer vacations, and for people to actually take them.
I’m baffled by organizations and employers who believe that it’s their right to expect their employees to spend most of their waking hours each day at work, and most of their working days each year. That strikes me as selfish and short-sighted.
